Given the political realities of his homeland, he has delved into a dream world, where eroticism and aesthetics combine in a photographic style that today retains its distinctive power. Based on the pornographic studio photographs of the nineteenth century, classical painting, and historical portraiture, Saudek’s nudes and erotic images reveal a world of fantasy, where artistic play and expression is unfettered by any one notion of reality. Using elaborately painted backdrops and interior walls, magical costumes and props, Saudek is both voyeur and participant, photographer and model, shifting back and forth in a style that lends the term autoportraiture whole new meaning. These pictures are as much about the artist as they are about any of the marvelous characters he portrays. As Saudek has often stated, I don’t have the capacity to portray other people’s lives. I am portraying my own.
