In addition to dealing with the gritty day-to-day cases Tennison has to solve—involving serial killers, rapists and child abusers—the drama also delves into her personal battles, including her marriage problems and struggle with alcoholism. As an on-going sub-plot, Prime Suspect raises the issue of sexual discrimination in the workforce, as Tennison faces the enduring battle of forging a career in this very male-dominated profession.
