Autorce v dobách největší povídkářské slávy učarovala nejen atmosféra dospívání v krajině jihoafrických farem, ale i přehuštěný Londýn, ve kterém se zabydlela až v dospělosti. Spisovatelka získala r. 2007 Nobelovu cenu za literaturu.
