Through a Glass Darkly
It is a luminous spring day in Venice, as Commissario Brunetti and Inspettore Vianello take a break from the Questura to come to the rescue of Vianello's friend Marco Ribetti, who has been arrested while protesting against chemical pollution of the Venetian lagoon, only to be faced by the fury of Marco's father-in-law, owner of a glass factory on the island of Murano.
But it is not Marco who has uncovered the guilty secret of the polluting glass foundries of the island of Murano, nor he whose body is found dead in front of the furnaces which burn at 1400 degrees, night and day. The victim has left clues in a copy of Dante and Brunetti must descend into an inferno to discover who is burning the land and fouling the waters of the lagoon...

Through The Looking Glass
I sent a letter to the fish, I told them, "This is what I wish." The little fishes of the sea, They sent an answer back to me. The little fishes' answer was "We cannot do it, sir, because ..." I sent a letter back to say It would be better to obey. But someone came to me and said "The little fishes are in bed." I said to him, and I said it plain "Then you must wake them up again." I said it very loud and clear, I went and shouted in his ear. But he was very stiff and proud, He said "You needn't shout so loud." And he was very proud and stiff, He said "I'll go and wake them if ..." I took a kettle from the shelf, I went to wake them up myself. But when I found the door was locked I pulled and pushed and kicked and knocked, And when I found the door was shut, I tried to turn the handle, But ...

A Journey Through Slovakia
My first visit to Slovakia was in the summer of 1994. I had travelled in my caravan with friends and toured the country. A highlight was a visit to the observation platform on top of Lomnicky Stit (2632 m) on a beautiful clear, sunny day. What tremendous views we had. Remember, the highest peak in England is Scafell Pike at 978 metres!
I moved in August 1995 to Slovakia to live and continue my teaching career at a bilingual school in the Petrzalka district of Bratislava. This was great because I was able to teach my subjects, history and geography, in English. I was then given the opportunity to work for the English department of Slovak Radio (Slovensky Rozhlas) in their international section. I mention this because my brief was to report from the various regions of Slovakia. For a foreigner this was an amazing job as I was able to travel throughout the country and report on things I discovered in this amazing little country in the heart of Europe.
This booklet builds on my experiences as I seek to share some of the treasures I discovered. Many of these treasures have stayed hidden to most of Western Europe. In fact, one of my criticisms of this country is that it does not sell itself well as a tourist destination. Perhaps, as Slovakia takes on the chairmanship of the European Union, this may change.
B. J. Harrison Reads Through the Looking-Glass (EN)
"Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" allows readers to return to the wondrous world of Alice. A sequel to Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," this novel sees Alice visiting a fantastical world once again, this time through a mirror. What she finds on the other side defies logic and turns the world as she knows it upside down.

Glass Pearls (Faber Editions)
Nothing is more inviting to disclose your secrets than to be told by others of their own ...
London, June 1965. Karl Braun arrives as a lodger in Pimlico: hatless, with a bow-tie, greying hair, slight in build. His new neighbours are intrigued by this cultured German gentleman who works as a piano tuner; many are fellow emigres, who assume that he, like them, came to England to flee Hitler. That summer, Braun courts a woman, attends classical concerts, dances the twist. But as the newspapers fill with reports of the hunt for Nazi war criminals, his nightmares become increasingly worse.

Through the Looking Glass (And What Alice Found There)
Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a work of children's literature by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), generally categorized as literary nonsense. It is the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Although it makes no reference to the events in the earlier book, the themes and settings of Through the Looking-Glass make it a kind of mirror image of Wonderland: the first book begins outdoors, in the warm month of May, on Alice's birthday (May 4), uses frequent changes in size as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of playing cards; the second opens indoors on a snowy, wintry night exactly six months later, on November 4 (the day before Guy Fawkes Night), uses frequent changes in time and spatial directions as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of chess. In it, there are many mirror themes, including opposites, time running backwards, and so on.

Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There (EN)
Once again, Alice finds herself in a peculiar place. In this sequel to `Alice Adventures in Wonderland‘, Alice has climbed through a mirror and arrived in a world in which everything is reversed, like a reflection – including logic. It makes for another absurdly funny story full of wonder and snark that, like the first book, never talks down to its young audience.
