Popri famóznom Herculovi Poirotovi v nej vystupuje aj detektívova výkonná, takmer dokonalá sekretárka slečna Lemonová.
A je to práve slečna Lemonová, kto upozorní Hercula Poirota na čudné udalosti v študentskom penzióne Tulipán na Hickory Road, ktorý spravuje jej sestra pani Hubbardová. Za normálnych okolností by drobné krádeže sotva vzbudili záujem slávneho detektíva. Keď si však prečíta bizarný zoznam ukradnutých a zničených vecí - vrátane stetoskopu, pudrenky, starých nohavíc, bonboniéry, rozstrihaného ruksaka a diamantového prsteňa, ktorý sa neskôr našiel v polievke -, musí blahoželať pani Hubbardovej k „jedinečnému a úžasnému rébusu“.
