Gulliverovy cesty - Gulliver’s travels + MP3
Když angloirský spisovatel a kněz Jonathan Swift (30. 11. 1667 – 19. 10. 1745) vydal roku 1726 pod pseudonymem Lemuel Gulliver knihu Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts, by Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships (Cesty k několika vzdáleným národům světa ve čtyřech dílech, napsal Lemuel Gulliver, zprvu ranhojič a později kapitán na několikerých lodích), později zkráceně Gulliverovy cesty, byla během týdne vyprodaná. Přinášíme vám první a známější dvě části tohoto satirického pojednání o lidské povaze a zároveň parodie na tehdejší cestopisy – Cestu mezi trpaslíky žijící v zemi Lilliput a cestu k obrům z Brobdingangu. Protože jde o poměrně složitý a dlouhý text, některé pasáže jsme upravili a zkrátili. K porozumění vám pomůže zrcadlový překlad do češtiny. Za každou kapitolou naleznete okomentování zajímavých jazykových jevů a následné procvičení. Celý příběh si můžete také poslechnout na CD.

Lacná kniha Gulliver´s Travels (-70%)
Swift raises doubts about the classifications and sizes of objects that we perceive all around us in Gulliver's Travels. These stories have clever dialogue with subtly political and social satire. His use of language to spread the use of humour and common sense, which humans fail to utilise, makes the story flow flawlessly and makes it incredibly simple to follow. There are also confirmed instances of laughter throughout. Although many kids read this book and appreciate Gulliver's adventures, when read by an adult, a completely different wisdom and perspective on people and mankind emerges.

Gulliver s Travels (EN)
When Lemuel Gulliver wakes up on an island after a shipwreck, tied on his hands and feet and with arrows pointed at him, you would think all hope is lost. But his captors are the size of a finger, their rope is as thin as thread, and their tiny arrows barely break the surface of his skin. This is not even as absurd as it gets on Gulliver‘s travels at sea, but, hilariously, he has no emotional response to any of it.

Gulliver's Travels
'Among the six indispensable books in world literature' George Orwell
In the course of his famous travels, Gulliver is captured by miniature people who wage war on each other because of religious disagreement over how to crack eggs, is sexually assaulted by giants, visits a floating island, and decides that the society of horses is better than that of his fellow man. Swift's tough, filthy and incisive satire has much to say about the state of the world today and is presented here in its unexpurgated entirety.
Gulliver’s Travels: Retold for younger listeners (EN)
Lemuel Gulliver sets out on a series of travels, but each time he finds himself shipwrecked in new and unfamiliar lands. And how unfamiliar … In Lilliput, everyone is tiny, and it takes thousands of them to capture him; in Brodingnag, they’re huge and treat him as a sort of living toy; in Laputa, they live on a floating island inventing impossibly mad projects; and the Houyhnhnms are horses! But through all his adventures, Gulliver learns to see humans in a different way, too.

Gulliver's Travels (Wordsworth Classics) (Wadsworth Collection)
With an Introduction and Notes by Doreen Roberts, Rutherford College, University of Kent at Canterbury Jonathan Swift's classic satirical narrative was first published in 1726, seven years after Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (one of its few rivals in fame and breadth of appeal). As a parody travel-memoir it reports on extraordinary lands and societies, whose names have entered the English language: notably the minute inhabitants of Lilliput, the giants of Brobdingnag, and the Yahoos in Houyhnhnmland, where talking horses are the dominant species. It spares no vested interest from its irreverent wit, and its attack on political and financial corruption, as well as abuses in science, continue to resonate in our own times.

The Travels of Sir John Mandeville
"Jehan de Mandeville", translated as "Sir John Mandeville", is the name claimed by the compiler of a singular book of supposed travels, written in Anglo-Norman French, and published between 1357 and 1371.By aid of translations into many other languages it acquired extraordinary popularity. Despite the extremely unreliable and often fantastical nature of the travels it describes, it was used as a work of reference — Christopher Columbus, for example, was heavily influenced by both this work and Marco Polo's earlier Il Milione (Adams 53).
