Sculptures

In cities, where does public space stop and privacy begin? Which experiences are purely personal and which ones are driven by commercially motivated impulses? Can we see the city and ourselves for what they actually are amidst the vast array of signs
and images clamoring for our attention? The American artist Brad Downey tackles these and other structural, social, and political questions in his work. With the element of surprise firmly on his side, he creates powerful interventions that disrupt
the routine of our visual perception. A shopping cart becomes a sculpture, a telephone booth is filled with balloons, and a stop sign is turned upside down. Using elements from film, sculpture, painting, and drawing, Downey creates remarkable work ra
nging from the spectacular and headline-making to the small, delicate, and almost hidden. Downey s interventions in the cityscape can be spontaneous, subtle, and fleeting it is precisely the way they interact with their surroundings that make them so
effective. Some exist for barely half an hour before they are corrected again; others integrate themselves into the urban landscape and become a permanent work of art in the process. Downey s art discourages quick glances and celebrates the double t
ake. It encourages the viewer to take a hard look and refreshes the powers of discrimination that so often become jaded in the visual Babylon of our times. For exclusive previews inside and excerpts from this book, go to www.gestalten.com

Michelangelo. The Complete Works. Paintings, Sculptures, Architecture
Before reaching the tender age of 30, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) had already sculpted Pieta and David, two of the most famous sculptures in the entire history of art. As a sculptor, painter, draftsman, and architect, the achievements of this Italian master are unique-no artist before or after him has ever produced such a vast, multifaceted, and wide-ranging oeuvre.
This fresh TASCHEN edition traces Michelangelo's ascent to the cultural elite of the Renaissance. Ten richly illustrated chapters cover the artist's paintings, sculptures, and architecture, including a close analysis of the artist's tour de force frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Full-page reproductions and enlarged details allow readers to appreciate the finest details in the artist's repertoire, while the book's biographical essay considers Michelangelo's more personal traits and circumstances, such as his solitary nature, his thirst for money and commissions, his immense wealth, and his skill as a property investor.
Sochy a projekty - Sculptures and Projects
Stanislav Kolíbal (1925) patří ke klíčovým osobnostem českého umění druhé poloviny 20. a počátku 21. století.

Starting from ancient times and continuing through the Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and Modern periods, this collection introduces readers to the artists and works that make sculpture such an exciting medium to explore. Among the artists included in the book are Michelangelo, Bernini, Rodin, Duchamp, Giacometti, Calder, Moore, Beuys, de Saint Phalle, and Bourgeois. From the Madonna of Essen, the oldest known sculpture of the Virgin Mary, to the sinuous metal sheets that make up Richard Serra's Matter of Time, each work is presented in spreads that offer beautiful photographs, biographical profiles of the artists, historical context, and anecdotal information. Broader texts describe various eras and styles as the book moves chronologically toward the present day, providing an art history lesson for everyone.

How to Read Greek Sculpture
Featuring decorative, religious, and utilitarian objects from the Geometric period to the Hellenistic Age, this is the ideal introduction to Greek sculpture
Introducing eight centuries of Greek sculpture, this latest addition to The Met's compelling and widely acclaimed How to Read series traces this artistic tradition from its early manifestations in the Geometric period (ca. 900-700 BCE) through the groundbreaking creativity of the Archaic and Classical periods to the dramatic achievements of the Hellenistic Age (323-31 BCE). The 40 works of art featured represent a broad range of objects and materials, both sacred and utilitarian, in metal, marble, gold, ivory, and terracotta. Sculptures of deities and architectural elements are joined by depictions of athletes, animals, and performers, as well as by funerary reliefs, perfume vases, and jewelry. The accompanying text both provides insight into Greek art as a whole and illuminates centuries of Greek life. Detailed commentaries on each work and an overview of major themes in Greek art offer a fascinating, object-focused introduction to one of the most influential cultures in Western civilization.

The book Natural by one of the most famous Czech sculptors Lukáš Rittstein (winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, leading the sculpture studio at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts) is not only a monography, but also the chapters of metaphorical sculptures balancing between reality and abstraction often seen in public space, are accompanied by a deeply human story of repeated encounters with the symbolically last cannibal chiefs of the Papuan Yali Mek tribe, who even enter the sculptures in some chapters, participate in the happenings and become sculptures...

Picasso Sculpture
Published in conjunction with the first large-scale retrospective of Picasso's sculpture in the US since The Museum of Modern Art's historic show of 1967, "Picasso Sculpture" is a sweeping survey of the artist's profoundly innovative and influential work in three dimensions.Over the course of his long career, Picasso devoted himself to sculpture wholeheartedly, if episodically, using both traditional and unconventional materials and techniques. Unlike painting, in which he was formally trained and through which he made his living, sculpture occupied a uniquely personal and experimental status in Picasso's oeuvre. He kept the majority of his sculptures in his private possession during his lifetime, and it was only in the late 1960s that the public became fully aware of this side of his oeuvre. "Picasso Sculpture" presents approximately 150 sculptures--many of them captured in newly commissioned and sometimes multi-view photographs--alongside a selection of works on paper and photographs. Organized into chapters that correspond to distinct periods during which Picasso devoted himself to sculpture, the publication features an introduction by the exhibition curators as well as a richly illustrated documentary chronology focusing on the sculptures included in the exhibition. A comprehensive bibliography and list of historic exhibitions related to Picasso's work in sculpture closes the volume, advancing the understanding of Picasso's practice and lifelong commitment to constant reinvention.

En Passant: Impressionism in Sculpture
Is there such a thing as "Impressionist sculpture"? Since 1881 when Edgar Degas presented Little Dancer Aged Fourteen at the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, the term has existed along with the discourse around it. This book is dedicated to the extensive examination of the question what it would mean to translate the characteristics of Impressionist painting, such as light, colour, ephemerality, and the ethereal, into sculpture. The book features a selection of artists including Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin, and Medardo Rosso and examines the artistic processes that traverse genres in which one medium is enhanced by others.
This valuable, fascinating resource offers a unique addition to the scholarship on the Impressionist era.
